Chapter Sixteen

Six

I couldn't get that image out of my head. Amadeo standing behind Luka, the knife cutting into his throat, the way he was about to kill him without hesitation. And then there was the look on Amadeo's face. So calm and dead as if he wasn't doing anything at all.

How could he be so okay with it?

I tugged the blanket over my head and made myself even smaller. Sure, I'd seen people get beat up but I had never seen anyone be almost killed right in front of me.

I should have stayed upstairs.

Closing my eyes and trying to sleep didn't help. I saw Amadeo covered in blood with a knife in his hand and remembered my situation and where I was. This was Amadeo's house and I was his prisoner. If he really wanted to, he could kill me without a second thought. And I had been playing games with him, sleeping with him, even enjoying his company.

A shiver wracked my body and I gripped my pillow more tightly. I have to get out of here.

Knock. Knock.

I sat up and stared at the door warily. "Yeah?"

"Can I come in?"

Angelo's voice was comforting. I hadn't seen Amadeo since the night before, but I knew he'd come to my room eventually. He always did.

"Yeah come in."

He let himself inside and a woman bustled past him, plopping a tray on my bed. She smiled at me and sat beside the tray.

"You must be Six," she said as she pushed the food toward me. "Ama said you had to be hungry by now so I'm bringing you dinner."

"Um, who are you?" I asked.

"Oh yeah, sorry I got ahead of myself." She held a hand out decorated in gold jewelry. "I'm Rayna. Ama's sister."

I stared at her. When I looked closer, I could see the family resemblance. Rayna had the same dark hair and olive skin. She looked expensive as if everything she wore was way out of everyone else's league. Her smile was soft, but there was something in her eyes that screamed not to underestimate her.

"Six," I said, finally taking her hand and shaking it lightly. "Did Amadeo send you in?"

She shook her head. "No, no nothing like that. He's having a meeting in his office and I was bored five minutes in so I came to see the new guest Gabriele has been telling me about." She pushed my food closer. "But do eat. No need to have an empty stomach because I'm here."

How could I explain to her that I didn't even have an appetite? That had disappeared when I watched Amadeo getting ready to kill without flinching. I tugged the tray closer and picked up a slice of pizza. Amadeo always pulled faces when I ordered it, but he had clearly had it made for me.

I took a bite and it tasted like sawdust in my mouth. Every time I thought about Amadeo, the same knot formed in my stomach and tightened. I sat the pizza down and grabbed the water bottle sipping from it while I tried to figure out why Amadeo's sister was here.
